Host of the 2012 World Expo, Yeosu is a coastal city by Korea’s southern sea, which is dotted with a great number of islands. The KTX ride from Seoul to Yeosu takes about 3 hours, and it is recommended that you also visit the nearby eco-city of Suncheon.

As a representative eco-city of Korea, Suncheon is home to Suncheonman Bay, one of the five major wetlands of the world. The field of reeds and mudflat is home to many plants and animals, and it also attracts a great number of rare birds. Through the vast field of reeds runs a boardwalk which offers picture-perfect views from anywhere you stand. After hosting the 2013 Suncheon Bay Garden Expo, the venue was turned into the Suncheon Bay National Garden housing not only a traditional Korean garden, but also unique and traditional gardens from around the world. If visiting the Suncheonman Bay and the National Garden on the same day, which are connected by a PRT called Sky Cube, you only need one ticket to enter both.

If in Yeosu, which is only 20 minutes by KTX and 50 minutes by bus from Suncheon, you have to ride the Yeosu Ocean Railbike. Pedal along the oceanside railroad and feel the cool ocean breeze, and also take beautiful pictures. And just about sunset, you should ride the Yeosu Cable Car (p. 31), which connects nearby islands to the mainland, for a fantastic view!
