Gwangju

Gwangju Metropolitan Area, surrounded by Jeollanam region, is the birthplace of the modern democratic movement in Korea and keeps the history well preserved.

This movement, which started as an opposition to military government in 1980 and was named as 18th May Democratic Uprising by UNESCO, is a turning point in the history of Korea. Gwangju, also known as the birthplace of classical Korean poem ‘gasa’, hosts annual cultural festivals related to both food and art.
